More Than a Nuisance — A Persistent Structural & Health Risk

Ants are highly social insects that live in organised colonies ranging from a few hundred individuals to several million, depending on the species. In Sydney, ant infestations peak during spring and summer as colonies expand and swarms of winged alates emerge to establish new nests. A single colony may contain multiple queens, making them exceptionally resilient to amateur treatments.

The key to effective ant control is targeting the colony — not just the foraging workers you see on the surface. Spraying visible ants with over-the-counter products may temporarily suppress activity, but the colony remains intact and rebounds quickly. Professional treatment uses slow-acting bait that workers carry back to the nest, delivering the active ingredient directly to the queen and brood.

Beyond the frustration of food contamination and kitchen invasions, certain ant species cause real structural damage. Coastal Brown Ants undermine pavers and foundations; Jack Jumper and Green-head ants deliver painful stings capable of triggering anaphylaxis in sensitive individuals; and Fire Ants — now detected in parts of eastern Australia — represent a serious biosecurity threat requiring immediate specialist response.

How Ant Colonies Work

Understanding colony structure explains why surface sprays alone rarely solve an ant problem — and why professional treatment targets the nest directly.

Colony Structure

Every ant colony is built around one or more egg-laying queens. Workers — sterile females — forage for food, maintain the nest, and tend to larvae. Winged males and virgin queens emerge seasonally for mating flights. Killing foragers without eliminating the queen achieves nothing lasting; the colony simply produces more workers within days.

Nesting Sites

Ants nest in soil, under pavers, in wall cavities, beneath concrete slabs, inside timber, in pot plants, and within roof voids. Some species — like Coastal Brown Ants — build shallow surface nests that create visible mounds; others nest deep underground or in concealed locations making them difficult to detect without a thorough inspection.

Foraging Trails

Worker ants deposit pheromone trail markers as they forage, guiding other workers to food sources. This is why removing food attractants without treating the colony provides only temporary relief — scouts rapidly establish new trails to alternative sources. Trail treatments must eliminate the colony or the behaviour resumes within days.

Multiple Queens

Many pest ant species — including Coastal Brown Ants and Argentine Ants — are polygyne (multiple queens per colony). This makes conventional nest destruction ineffective; surviving queens simply relocate and rebuild. Treatments must use slow-acting baits or non-repellent insecticides that the entire colony contacts before the product is detected and avoided.

Seasonal Pressure

Ant activity intensifies in warm weather — particularly from October through March in Sydney — as colonies expand and food-seeking behaviour increases. Warm, humid conditions after rain trigger mass foraging. Certain species also nest in walls and roof voids during cooler months, meaning year-round management programs often deliver the best outcomes for persistently affected properties.

Bait Aversion & Repellency

Many over-the-counter ant sprays use repellent insecticides that ants detect and avoid. While this can seem to work at first, it causes colony "budding" — the colony splits and relocates, spreading the infestation to new areas. Professional non-repellent formulations and purpose-designed gel baits eliminate this risk, delivering control without triggering avoidance behaviour.

Ant Species Found in Greater Sydney

Species identification determines which bait formulation, treatment method, and nest-targeting strategy will be most effective for your infestation.

Coastal Brown Ant

Pheidole megacephala

One of the most common structural pests in Sydney. Coastal Brown Ants build large, shallow nests under pavers, driveways, and turf — often visible as fine sandy mounds along edges. Multiple queens make colonies extremely persistent. Workers forage in long, well-defined trails and readily contaminate food. Responds well to granular or gel baiting.

Black House Ant

Ochetellus glaber

A shiny, jet-black ant commonly found in kitchens, bathrooms, and wall voids. Black House Ants are attracted to sweet foods, greasy residues, and moisture — typically nesting outdoors and entering buildings through cracks and gaps. Highly opportunistic foragers that rapidly exploit new food sources. Gel baits placed along active trails are highly effective.

Argentine Ant

Linepithema humile

An introduced species forming "supercolonies" — vast, interconnected networks of nests spanning entire city blocks with no territorial aggression between colonies. Argentine Ants displace native species and are notoriously difficult to control due to their polygyne structure and bait aversion. Non-repellent baiting programs carried out across the entire affected zone are required for meaningful control.

Green-Head Ant

Rhytidoponera metallica

A native ant with a distinctive metallic green-purple sheen. Green-Head Ants deliver a painful sting that can cause anaphylactic reactions in sensitive individuals — making them a genuine medical concern in gardens, parks, and outdoor entertainment areas. They nest in soil, often under rocks and pavers. Dust treatments applied to nest entrances are the most effective control method.

Bulldog Ant

Myrmecia spp.

Australia's largest and most aggressive native ant, reaching up to 40mm in length. Bulldog Ants (also called Bull Ants or Jack Jumpers in smaller species) can sting repeatedly and are a leading cause of anaphylaxis in Australia — responsible for more deaths from anaphylaxis than funnel-web spiders. Nests are found in soil and are particularly dangerous near children's play areas.

Notifiable Pest

Red Imported Fire Ant

Solenopsis invicta

A highly invasive species subject to mandatory eradication programs. Fire Ants deliver multiple painful stings capable of causing anaphylaxis and can form mounds of 100,000+ workers. Now detected in south-east Queensland and isolated NSW areas. If you suspect a fire ant nest, do not disturb it — report to NSW DPI and contact us immediately for assessment. Specialist treatment is required by law.

Professional Ant Control Methods

Effective ant management targets the colony — not just the foragers. Kinetic Pest Management uses an integrated approach tailored to the species and situation.

01

Gel Baiting — Colony Elimination

Slow-acting gel baits (such as Advion Ant Gel and Maxforce Quantum) are placed in small amounts along active foraging trails and near entry points. Workers carry the bait back to the nest, feeding it to the queen and larvae. The delayed action ensures the whole colony — including queens — is eliminated before the bait is identified as a threat. Highly effective for German cockroach-style indoor infestations.

02

Granular Baiting — Outdoor Colonies

Granular baits (including Coopex, Extinguish Plus, and Amdro) are broadcast or spot-applied around nest sites, garden beds, and perimeter areas. Workers carry granules underground to feed the colony. Granular products are weather-resistant and provide extended control in outdoor environments where gel baits would dry out. Particularly effective for Coastal Brown Ants and other surface-nesting species.

03

Non-Repellent Perimeter Sprays

Non-repellent liquid insecticides (fipronil, imidacloprid) applied to the building perimeter, entry points, and foundation create a transfer zone that ants walk through without detecting. They carry residues back to the colony on their bodies, delivering colony-wide exposure. Unlike traditional pyrethroid perimeter sprays, non-repellent formulations don't cause colony budding or avoidance behaviour.

04

Insecticidal Dust — Void Treatments

Dust formulations (deltamethrin dust, diatomaceous earth) injected into wall voids, subfloor spaces, and roof cavities reach colonies nesting in concealed locations inaccessible to sprays and baits. Dust particles cling to ant bodies and are groomed off and ingested, providing both contact and oral kill. Silica dust products offer long-residual, non-chemical alternative control for sensitive environments.

05

Nest Injection & Direct Treatment

Where nest sites are identified and accessible, direct treatment with residual liquid insecticide or expanding foam delivers immediate, targeted colony knockdown. Used in conjunction with perimeter treatments and baiting for multi-pronged colony elimination. Particularly effective for Bulldog Ants and Green-head Ants nesting in clearly defined soil mounds.

06

Ongoing Prevention Programs

For persistently affected properties — especially commercial premises with food handling areas — we recommend quarterly or bi-annual maintenance programs. These combine perimeter inspections, trail monitoring, bait replenishment, and entry-point sealing to maintain a continuous barrier against re-infestation. We also advise on hygiene practices, food storage, and landscaping modifications that reduce ant attractants long-term.
